Blackness today...

"Blackness today..." is an excerpt from LATASHÁ's "All A Dream" multimedia performance feat I filmed in 2018 featuring Slicc. I reinterpreted the clip and synced it with a poem from LATASHÁ called "Blackness today..." this visual is a conversation on the black experience, and the poem goes as follows...

"Blackness today is in a smile, with a razor under its tongue, standing in the middle of the dance floor, with America's blood all over it."

I see this piece is a visceral depiction of our journey—the tugging and pulling represent us breaking into our freedom. Because despite everything, we always breakthrough.

Slicc's bone-breaking and flexing in combination with my poem is a metaphor for how often Black bodies have had to adjust and carry America on our bones.

Having to smile and dance, while also having to protect ourselves, our joy, our language, while simultaneously having to carry America's traumas: It's all bone-breaking and ironically being able to do all of this…is the flex.
